• Welcome to the New Mexico Alliance of Health Councils (NMAHC) a statewide coalition of the state’s 39 county and tribal health councils and their supporters.  The Alliance was created in 2010 to support and strengthen the health councils, and to provide a common voice on behalf of community health improvement in New Mexico.

  • New Mexico’s County and Tribal Health Councils  were created by the New Mexico State Legislature in 1991.  Since then, the councils have played a key role in the state’s public health system by identifying local health needs, establishing community priorities and plans, and implementing local solutions.  The health councils have also attracted millions of dollars in funding to support programs and services to improve the health of their communities.

2019 is an important year for health councils. Thanks to everyone's dedication and hard work, HB137 - the County and Tribal Health Councils Act was passed and signed into law by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham.

The County and Tribal Health Plan Act puts into law the overall structure for health councils, one which reflects and codifies the current role that health councils play as comprehensive health councils. This is an important step forward in strengthening the health council support structure, and in recognizing the councils as an integral and essential part of New Mexico's public health system.

This legislation came directly out of the work of the Task Force created by Senate Memorial 44, in which many of you participated and which resulted in a Report and Recommendations to the Legislature. The fact that this legislation passed unanimously in both the House and Senate is extraordinary, showing bi-partisan support for the work of health councils. Congratulations and thank you to everyone for your work!
